How to remove a concrete filled bollard?

Oct 23, 2025|

Removing concrete-filled bollards is a challenging task due to their heavy weight and depth in concrete.

Required Tools and Materials

Pneumatic chisel or concrete saw

Sledgehammer

Pry bar or crowbar

Safety gear (gloves, safety goggles, dust mask, hearing protection)

Shovel

Concrete drill (if needed)

Wheelbarrow (for handling debris)

Heavy lifting equipment (if needed, depending on bollard size)

Step-by-Step Process

Assess the Bollard

Inspect how the bollard is installed.

Determine the bollard depth.

Estimate the area around the bollard that needs excavation. This may involve removing surrounding soil or pavement if necessary.

Remove the Bollard

Break up the surrounding concrete base using a jackhammer or concrete saw. Start from the edges and work toward the bollard.

If the bollard is deeply embedded, multiple layers of concrete may need to be cut.

After removing the surrounding concrete, use a sledgehammer to separate the bollard from its base.

If the bollard is too heavy, use lifting equipment (e.g., crane or hoist) to remove it.

Clear all debris and broken concrete, disposing of it properly at a recycling center or designated waste disposal area.

After removal, fill the hole with new concrete, soil, or other materials based on the surrounding surface conditions or intended use.

Time Required

1 to 7 days: Larger bollards or those deeply embedded in concrete require more time for removal. Smaller bollards may be removed within a single day. Experienced workers can expedite the process. Demolition time increases proportionally when multiple bollards are involved.

For large or deeply embedded bollards, it is advisable to hire experienced professionals or contractors.
